Burwood Heights PS Real Life Adventures and Circus Oz

5 October 2016

In 2014, Chris brought a group to see Circus Oz' Curiosity and participate in the Circus Skills Workshop. It was very successful on every level. They're coming back again this year ( because the cohort are from Yr 5 & 6, they can only repeat an excursion every 2 years) to see Circus Oz' new show 3 Speed Crunch Box. Chris said the 2014 excursion was one of their most successful because of the insights they gained by doing a workshop with such skilled trainers which, in turn, helped them appreciate the skills that were seamlessly worked into the show. They also had a behind the scenes tour of the facilities, looking at where the sets and costumes are made and learning some of the history of Circus Oz.

This is part of the imprimateur of the Real Life Adventures Program. Students are given the opportunity to see the whole spectrum involved with their study. They went to see a saw mill, then a furniture factory. They can ask questions and analyse the whole process.

Every part of the excursion becomes an opportunity for learning. To come to Circus Oz in Collingwood, the students even had to work out how to get there on public transport. And get there on time!

Chris said .."the show was very entertaining, displaying a high level of skill and talent. I thought it catered for a wide range of ages. The workshop was good covering a range of skills. The tour was excellent..."

Some Student Comments:

Ben ..."SOME (performances) are better than movies. I’ve learnt that live performances can be more enclosed with less people so you can talk to the actors. My highlights were when the guy in the performance built a tower of chairs and then did a handstand on top! I also enjoyed learning how to do tricks especially the devil sticks"

Luke: How many circuses are there and if you want to try out where do you go?

RubenI have learned that you have to practise lots to do even the simplest things. My goal is to be able to juggle 5 balls at once

Meg: Why is the career path as being a circus actor not heard about a lot and why do people do silly tricks like knife throwing? I loved learning the three circus skills and I also loved going into the room where the costumes where made.
