Thanks to Frankston Art Centre

20 September 2017

Each SFS enews edition, we offer 2 tickets to anything on SFS. The first Victorian subscriber to respond asked for tickets for Horrible Harriet (image above) at FAC during the holidays.

There is now one very happy mother and daughter going along to see the show next week. Thanks FAC!

To see what other events you can see at FAC, check out Frankston Arts Centre profile, including All My Love, the story of the secret bethrothal  of 2 of Australia's writing legends, Henry Lawson and Mary Gilmore. Fascinating. On in March next year.

Have you made your bookings for next term - or even for next year?

20 September 2017

If you want a specific date for an incursion, please book it well in advance! It's so disappointing when we can't help schools with the show they want because their date is inflexible and they book too close to it!

Pop-up Globe in Melbourne A Winner

19 September 2017

Some lucky SFS staff went to see Othello at the Pop-up Globe. It was a great experience.

Teachers - make the most of the Globe being in Melbourne (it's only for 2 months) and, at least, bring your students to the show specially designed for school students from Yr 6 up Around the Globe in 60 Minutes! It will inform and inspire their study of Shakespeare and/or history. Can't recommend you visit highly enough! Details.

Pop-up Globe will be visiting other capital cities next year. Stay tuned.

Booking Your End Of Term Show

15 September 2017

Many primary schools are designating a date for a show, then trying to fit the show into it. We have had so many bookings for the 12/13 of December! It would be great if you could book in the show of your choice first - you're much more likely to get what you want then.

'Cool' Science Christmas Show has just announced extra dates for Melbourne - Dec 4 - 8th. The following week is pretty solidly booked in Sydney/ACT but we might just fit you in.

Attracting teachers to rural schools - time for a rethink

7 September 2017

Attracting to teachers to rural schools has been a long term problem in Australia. This challenge was mentioned in the NSW Parliament in 1904. There have been several reviews over the years, to suggest strategies, the last of which was in 2004. Solutions are tricky. Try incentives, but this works for a short time, the incentive is gained, then teachers return to the city.

Students in rural schools, therefore, are less likely to have access to a good education.

In March this year, the government announced an independent review into regional, rural and remote education.

It's time to think of a fresh approach. Nothing has worked for over 100 years. One suggestion is to elevate rural teaching to a specialty in it's own right, akin to specialising in rural health. Read More

Feedback on We're Going On A Bear Hunt

30 August 2017

Garry Ginivan Attractions' We're Going On A Bear Hunt has almost finished it's national tour. Thousands of students and families have seen it. Here are a few teacher comments on it:

"It was a fabulous show, and it really made us think about how would could use everyday objects in our dramatic play to symbolise life experiences.  It was very interactive, and there was something for all ages- even the adults! The talent of the performers was outstanding..." C. Caligiore, RCH Early Learning Centre

"The show was absolutely amazing! I’ve been recommending it to everyone I know with young children and am hoping to take our preps to see a live show every year from now on. The children LOVED it.”  J. Rogers, Banyan Fields Primary

“…it was a great success. The children loved how interactive and engaging the show was” S. Robson, Corpus Christie, Glenroy.

"The show was amazing! The kids, and teachers, loved it! It's always a great show when the actors interact with the kids and the kids can join in, and they especially loved the water scene. "A. Elmore, Brimingham Primary

"We LOVED the show!  Thank you so much.  Very clever and creative way to portray the story. The children had a wonderful time...Took the 3 year olds for the first time ever on excursion." G. Cutler, Huntingtower School
