The arts as drivers of the innovative economy

20 May 2017

Sadly the government quest for innovation from STEM technologies (science, technology, engineering, and maths) ignores the potential from arts industries where funding could have huge economic benefits to the country.

In part, the problem is in the language. Fashion for instance is more about reinvention than new "breakthroughs", yet the fashion industry already accounts for 220,000 jobs in Australia. Why not invest in it further, so Australians spend their fashion dollars on home grown product and fashion can further develop export markets?

"Australia has long had a vibrant artistic scene that has translated into success in fashion, advertising, and industrial design – which are all critical to market success today.

The knowledge in these sectors is just as important to building a sustainable innovation economy as STEM disciplines, and should be part of a more nuanced innovation debate."

Yr 9 Students in Geelong After Dark

11 May 2017

One of Victoria's regional cities, Geelong, had a one night event last Friday - Geelong After Dark (GAD).

Luckily it wasn't too cold and lots of people were out enjoying light shows, opera on the steps of the town hall, spooky experiences in the Wool Museum and lots more.

Congrats to the 4 Christian College Yr 9 students who aced the GAD theme of The Sound of Light with their deconstructed musical instrument installation. They recycled old/broken musical instruments - see the piano and guitars in the image above. The students were there on the night, explaining their project to passers-by. They had to apply to the GAD Committee and were the youngest participants. (Pictured above is one of the students, Taylor Beard, with SFS's Karen Keegan)

Very impressive!
