Arts Ads: Creating a Bill Poster

Live performance relies on striking and informative bill posters to attract an audience.

Learn design techniques used by the professionals to advertise arts events to the general public. In Art Ads: Designing a Bill Poster, participants will learn the basics of visual communication through looking at the Posters of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Performing Arts Collection. We’ll then work in Adobe Photoshop to make a Billboard, Backlit or Tram stop poster, starring the students’ pictures.

Session outline:
  • Learn about the evolution of the Bill Poster through images from Arts Centre Melbourne’s Performing Arts Collection
  • Identify different elements of an effective bill poster
  • Basic image editing in Photoshop
  • Include a photo of the students on the poster
  • The influence of typography
  • Balancing information with visual style
  • Working with a multi-layered image

Additionally, in the 3 hour session:
  • Working with filters and visual effects
  • Advanced image editing

Student work will be printed at the end of the workshop and then made available for download.
