The Suitcase Series is a brilliant introduction to VCE Drama and in one day opens their minds to many different dramatic ways scripts can be interpreted, which is invaluable.
Maryanne Marron, Brighton Secondary College

The Suitcase Series over time has encouraged some students who had not intended to continue with Drama post year 10, to take up the challenge of VCE Drama and Theatre Studies.
Mandy Calderwood, Christian College Geelong

The Suitcase Series is Malthouse Theatre’s award-winning Education program that has been inspiring Victorian students since 2010.

Every two years we commission a new play that tackles the theme of Climate Change. Year 9 and 10 students from across the state devise their own performances in response to the script.

In 2017, Turbine by Dan Giovannoni returns for the second year as our specially commissioned play.

Malthouse Theatre makes the script available, along with extensive Teachers Notes and stimulus materials. The Suitcase Series is designed to run over Terms 3 and 4, providing a valuable and distinctive opportunity to structure the Drama curriculum across an entire semester.

This innovative and celebrated program is a chance for students to expand their theatre-making skills and to share an in-theatre performance day with their peers, before viewing Malthouse Theatre’s full length production of the play. Here are links to the full script and Teachers Resources.

“I thought this year's Suitcase Series was the best so far. The students gained skills in writing, directing, team work, performing, designing, problem solving and producing. It is the perfect experience for VCE Drama Ensemble work as well as VCE Theatre Studies. The material provided was very useful, particularly the stimulus material for each scene. Seeing other schools perform on the day was very inspiring. It's so wonderful to see how other students imagine the same text. It's always great to see new ways of doing things. Thank you so much. We are definitely back for more next year.”
Sandie Klein, Leibler Yavneh College, 2016

More Reviews

The Suitcase Series is a great program. We plan, of course, on being a part of it next year.
Tessa Kerekes, Haileybury College

Students developed practical skills in script writing, directing, performing and responding to stimulus. It was especially helpful to have students design their own lighting and see it come to life on stage in a professional space.
Judita Turco, Marymede College

The Suitcase Series provided our students with a unique opportunity to explore a great theatrical text, create their own unique interpretation of this text, explore their own stories, explore the world and their place within it.
Mark Lauber, Trinity College

The girls had a fascinating and challenging day. They were proud of themselves. So the experience was valuable on a social / emotional level as well as learning theatre craft and drama skills.
Leigh Waters, Worawa Aboriginal Girls’ College
