Private Peaceful

Promise Adelaide.

It is hard to overstate the quality of Francis’ performance… His is a performance worth cancelling all prior engagements for… A stunning one man debut.
Peter Maddern, Krystoff Media

This is an absolutely marvellous, flawless production… At only 17 himself, Francis gives a faultless and magnificent performance. He is spectacular, playing all the characters involved to a tee… If it ever returns, rush to see it.
Brian Godfrey, Adelaide Theatre Guide

Promise Adelaide is pleased to be bringing back Private Peaceful to the Bakehouse Theatre in April 2018. There are only limited performances, and tickets are selling fast.

Often on recommended reading lists for high-school English, Private Peaceful was Winner of the 2004 Red House Children’s Book Award, the 2005 Blue Peter Book of the Year Award, the Hampshire Book Award, and the California Young Reader Medal. The story examines the horrors of World War I and the unfair treatment of soldiers who were executed by firing squad for desertion or cowardice. This poignant subject matter provides drama, english, and history students with a particularly pertinent opportunity to learn about the trepidation of war through the first-hand account of a teenage soldier. Private Peaceful’s journey also speaks directly to the experiences of young people who are going through adolescence and into young adulthood.

During the course of one night, Private Thomas ‘Tommo’ Peaceful reflects on his short, yet joyful past: growing up in rural Devon; his exciting first days at school; his father’s accident in a forest; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. This demanding and thought-provoking narrative will teach students of the military codes of justice that prescribed cowardice as a crime punishable by death, as well as the horrors of shell-shock and PTSD.

A comprehensive study guide will be provided for all school bookings, and each 10:30am performance will include a Q&A session with Rob Croser and Ben Francis. A complete educational package - suitable for students in years 6-12.

Testimonials from the 2017 Season include:
This gripping monologue had students on the edge of their seats and engaged throughout the performance. The play has significant educational value and can be either an introduction to a unit on the first world war or as a way to conclude studies. Certainly an experience not to be missed! ~Ellen Grear, Immanuel College

Our students really enjoyed the play and your brilliant interpretation of the script. I will certainly be recommending the play to family and friends, as well as older students in Drama at the school. ~Briony Monahan, Plympton International College
Mature themes (World War One) Recommended for years 6-12.

This is why theatre lovers see as much as possible, because in amongst the mix of ho-hum, good and excellent there is a gem… and Private Peaceful is that gem.
Maxine Gruebel, Stage Whispers

Francis’ performance is outstanding. The performance is well paced and sensitive and good enough to have the audience of school children attentive and listening.
