#Photograph 51 & The Penelopiad - VIRTUAL

Complete Works Theatre Company

This is an invaluable resource for our students. They get a sense of the texts in a way that only performance can provide.

It was a complex re-telling of the two plays and we felt that Complete Works all rose to the challenge and provided the students with some wonderful insights into both texts. The girls wholeheartedly enjoyed the show and we received some lovely comments a

Pair 6: Photograph 51 by Anna Ziegler and The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood

Extracts from Photograph 51 and The Penelopiad are integrated into performance and presented in a style that enables students to make clear thematic comparisons and contrasts between the two texts.

Among the key ideas explored we consider the realities of women’s lives in a patriarchal society, the nature of institutionalised misogyny, and how personality is presented as a contributing factor in being treated as an outsider.

Enabling the voice of the marginalised is a primary theme of both texts. In this presentation the maids of The Penelopiad feature in a series songs that illuminate their function and importance in the story. This program has been developed using the paired texts, Photograph 51 by Anna Ziegler and The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, in consultation with Complete Works' Teacher Advisory Group.
