Parrwang Lifts the Sky (Metro)

Victorian Opera

Parrwang

It was a fantastic opportunity for students who usually have absolutely no exposure to this aspect of The Arts.
Teacher, Wandin North

I learnt that opera can be in different languages. I thought it was just in Italian. I found it interesting how the different songs conveyed different emotions.
Student, Ballarat

Did you know that magpies created the first dawn?*

Tjatjarrang (Big Sister) and Koki (Brother) are young, adventurous and tired of living in the dark. When they climb to the top of an ancient gum tree, they discover a steadfast friend in Parrwang the Magpie, who helps them lift the blanket of darkness.

*Based on an original story from Wadawurrung Country

Join the team at Victorian Opera as they prepare for their 2024 schools' performances of Parrwang Lifts the Sky. Written by Yorta Yorta composer and opera singer Deborah Cheetham Fraillon, AO, this production reveals how the first dawn came to be from the oral history of the Wadawurrung people.

Receive four FREE interactive workshops livestreamed directly into the classroom when you book tickets for your students to attend this production at Merlyn Theatre, Malthouse in May 2024. Victorian Opera takes your students into the world of opera without leaving the classroom and they can meet the singers, composer and director, explore the unique artistic characteristics of opera, learn about Wadawurrung culture and discover what happens inside the rehearsal room to bring the opera to life on stage.

The Access All Areas: Livestream Program is easily accessed online with all four workshops and the performance available later on-demand for repeat viewing.

This program is supported by downloadable curriculum-aligned classroom resources and activities tailored to each workshop. Available mid-March 2024 via Victorian Opera's Education Resources webpage.

Please note: This production is sung in English and Wadawurrung language with English scene descriptors.
