Lowana College

World-weary soldier Benedick and his friend Claudio find themselves reacquainted with Beatrice and Hero. As memories of conflict give way to a life of parties, Claudio and Hero fall madly in love, while Beatrice and Benedick reignite their own combative courtship. Appearance and reality, revenge and the double standards of men are explored in Shakespeare's most performed romantic comedy.

The text provides great value in the verbal sparring between Beatrice and Benedick and the somewhat pathetic pomposity of the constable Dogberry. It is possible that Shakespeare's audience would have been outraged at Claudio's sudden repudiation of the innocent Hero, so easily persuaded by the dastardly Don John. A contemporary audience may be horrified to witness the double standards of the men in the play, who expect one type of behaviour from women and another from themselves. In exploring the fate of Beatrice and Benedick, as well as Hero and Claudio, the play highlights issues relating to the nature of love.
