BARRACKING FOR THE UMPIRE by Andrea Gibbs

Black Swan State Theatre Company of WA

BARRACKING

Highly entertaining yet heartbreaking
The West Australian

Doug Williams is the greatest footballer Donnybrook has ever seen. Hard as flint. Salt of the earth. His wife Delveen, has been by his side for years, through head knock after head knock.

Like many country families, the children have left Donnybrook to pursue career opportunities, apart from their eldest daughter Charaine who has remained in town, close to her parents.

To celebrate Doug’s lifetime achievement award at the local football club, Doug's son Ben, a rising AFL star and daughter Mena, an ambitious sports journalist, fly home to Donnybrook, Western Australia.

Reunited with their parents and sister Charaine, they begin to understand why Charaine lost her passion for football as they witness the rapid decline of their father’s health due to repeated head injury from the game.
