Leading to the Revolution and the overthrow of the monarchy in France, the storming of the Bastille by Parisian peasants in 1789 is celebrated as the birth of their Republic.
They managed this over 200 years ago, a year after the British established a penal colony here. And we still have a foreign monarch as our head of state.
