I was shocked to read that it's only been since 1948 that an Australian woman didn't automatically lose her Australian citizenship when marrying a foreign national. The thinking obviously was that the woman would become a citizen of her husband's country. This often did not happen, especially after the turmoil of the first world war, with the result the Australian woman would become stateless.
Yes, Australian women got the vote at Federation, but it clearly did not make them equal citizens.
